As an expectant mom and new mom, one of the most significant aspects is breastfeeding along with breastfeeding positions.

I know that you’re having a life-changing experience, filled with joy, excitement, and a deep sense of responsibility. While breastfeeding offers numerous benefits for both you and your baby, it also presents some challenges, especially when it comes to finding the best breastfeeding position that suits both of you. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore some of the most comfortable and effective breastfeeding positions to help new moms make this bonding experience as enjoyable as possible.

For the first two breastfeeding positions, you can always have a breastfeeding pillow. I recommend My Breast Friend because it is steady enough and comfortable for you and your baby.

#1 – Cradle Hold

The cradle hold is one of the most classic breastfeeding positions and is favored by many new moms for its comfort and intimacy. Here’s how to do it:

  • Choose Your Comfort Zone: Begin by selecting a comfortable chair or couch with good back support. Ensure you have a few pillows nearby for extra comfort and support. You can have a breastfeeding pillow such as Boppy or My Breast Friend.
  • Secure the Baby: Hold your baby’s head with one hand and support their body with your other arm. Your baby’s head should rest in the crook of your elbow.
  • Proper Alignment: Bring your baby close to your breast, ensuring their head and body are in a straight line. Use a pillow to support your arm if necessary.
  • Latching On: To ensure a proper latch, ensure that your baby’s mouth covers most of the areola, not just the nipple. This ensures a comfortable feeding experience for both you and your baby.

The cradle hold is a great option for bonding with your baby, as you can easily maintain eye contact, talk to them, and enjoy skin-to-skin contact. It’s a classic choice that many new moms find comforting and nurturing.

#2 – Football Hold

The football hold, also known as the clutch or underarm hold, is another popular position for new moms. It’s especially useful if you’ve had a C-section or have larger breasts. Here’s how to do it:

  • Choose Your Setting: Sit in a chair or on a bed with pillows supporting your back and arms for added comfort.
  • Baby’s Position: Position your baby alongside you, tummy down, with their legs tucked under your arm like a football. Their body should be facing your breast. You can use a breastfeeding pillow too.
  • Supporting the Head: Support your baby’s head with your hand, ensuring their mouth is aligned with your nipple.
  • Breast Support: Use your other hand to support your breast, helping your baby latch on correctly.

The football hold offers great visibility, making it easier for new moms to ensure a proper latch. It’s particularly beneficial for mothers who may have had surgery or find it challenging to hold their baby in a more traditional cradle position. I say this is one of my favorite breastfeeding positions, it is comfortable and my baby could eat at ease.

#3 – Side-Lying Position

The side-lying position is excellent for night-time feedings when you want to rest and bond with your baby. Here’s how to do it:

  • Get Comfortable: Lie on your side in a comfortable bed. Make sure you have enough pillows to support your head and shoulders.
  • Baby’s Position: Place your baby beside you, facing your breast. Your baby’s head should be at breast level.
  • Latching On: Support your baby’s head and guide them to your breast for a latch.

This position allows both you and your baby to relax fully, making it an ideal choice for those late-night feedings when you want to minimize disruption to your sleep patterns. Side-lying breastfeeding can also be beneficial for mothers recovering from childbirth, as it reduces strain on the abdominal muscles.

#4 – Laid-Back Position (Biological Nurturing)

The laid-back position, also known as biological nurturing, takes a more relaxed approach to breastfeeding. It promotes a natural and instinctual latch for your baby. Here’s how to do i

  • Get Cozy: Lie back on a comfortable surface with pillows supporting your head and shoulders. You can do this on a bed or a couch.
  • Baby’s Position: Place your baby on your chest, allowing them to rest against you in a belly-down position.
  • Instinctual Latching: Your baby will naturally find your breast and latch on.

This position mimics the way babies naturally latch onto the breast when placed on their mother’s abdomen after birth. It can be incredibly soothing for both mom and baby, encouraging skin-to-skin contact and promoting a strong breastfeeding bond.

Don’t worry about having just one, because what works best may change as your baby grows, so it’s essential to remain flexible and open to trying different breastfeeding positions until you find the one that works best for both of you.
