Bringing a newborn home from the hospital can be quite overwhelming, especially for first-time parents. But with the right preparation and supplies, you can make the transition smooth and comfortable for everyone: mom, dad, and of course, baby. In this post, we’ll cover the must-have items you need when bringing a newborn home from the hospital. Remember, you don’t need to have everything perfectly in place before your baby arrives but having these key items ready to go can make a big difference.

#1 – Car Seat

A car seat is an essential item for transporting your newborn home from the hospital. In fact, they won’t let you go without one. Make sure you choose a car seat that is compatible with the stroller. I recommend first choosing a car seat and then finding a stroller that is compatible and has the features you’d like.

It’s also important to follow the guidelines for safe use, such as keeping your baby rear-facing until they reach the weight limit for the car seat. Look for one with an easy-to-use harness system, comfortable padding, and a sunshade to protect your baby from the sun. Some car seats also come with additional features like a removable infant insert, a one-hand adjustable headrest, and a base that stays in the car.

My favorite car seat is Cybex Aton, I used it with my two kids and I was very happy with it. No secret that my stroller is Uppababy and this car seat can adapt to my Minu with these adapters. I say it is mom-recommended.

#2 – Diapers, Wipes, and Diaper Cream

Newborns (and babies in general) go through a lot of diapers and wipes, so make sure you have a good supply on hand. Cloth or disposable, the choice is yours, but keep in mind that newborns typically need to be changed 8-12 times a day. I went with disposable, and I used these because they are super absorbent, and my babies rarely get wet. You may also want to invest in a diaper pail to help contain the odor.

When choosing diapers, look for ones that are soft, absorbent, and have a good fit around your baby’s legs and waist. It’s also important to choose wipes that are gentle and free of fragrances and other irritants. I love the ones that are made 99% of water like this.

Also, diaper rash is very common in newborns, so make sure you have a gentle diaper rash cream on hand to soothe your baby’s skin. I have 2 kinds of creams, this one that I use every day on every change, and this one that is stronger for when my baby has a burn, and it helps!

#3 – Clothing

Your newborn will need several changes of clothing each day. Make sure you have a supply of onesies, pj’s, and other baby clothes that are comfortable and easy to put on (and to put out too).

When choosing clothes, look for ones that are soft, easy to wash, and dry. You may also want to invest in a few hats, socks, and mittens to keep your baby warm and cozy.

#4 – Swaddles

Swaddling can help your baby feel secure and sleep better for the first two months. Make sure you have a few soft, breathable blankets that are designed for swaddling. Swaddling can help your baby feel secure and sleep better. You may also want to invest in a few sleep sacks or wearable blankets can help your baby stay warm without the risk of loose blankets.

When choosing blankets, look for ones that are made of a breathable fabric like cotton or muslin. Avoid blankets that are too thick or heavy, as they can increase the risk of overheating or suffocation.

#5 – Burp Cloths and Pacifiers

These are a must-have for any new parent! You’ll need them for almost everything. I used them for burping after feedings and wiping up any spit-up. If I need to put her on the sofa with me, I put a cloth, or in the bed, they become very handy! These are my favorites of all. Pacifiers are great for soothing a fussy baby, so having a few on hand is a good idea. My baby loves these from Avent, and they come with their own sterilizer box

#6 – Baby BathTub

Bathing a newborn can be a slippery and tricky experience, which is why a baby bathtub is an essential item. Look for a tub that’s designed for newborns and has a soft, non-slip mat to keep your baby from sliding around. It’s also important to keep the water temperature between 90-100°F and never leave your baby unattended in the tub.

When choosing a baby bathtub, look for one that fits your home and that you feel will make the job easier. You may also want to choose a bathtub that’s easy to clean. This tub from Fisher Price made my baby bath time comfortable, however to me it wasn’t so easy to clean, but it’s worthwhile.

#7 – Breastfeeding Supplies

If you plan to breastfeed, you’ll need a few supplies to help make the experience comfortable and convenient. A good breast pump it’s the most important piece. Nursing bras and breast pads can help protect your clothing from leaks. You’ll also need bags to store expressed milk, bottles, and a bottle brush for cleaning. Another important item is a nursing pillow to help support your baby while breastfeeding. To me, this was the key to having a comfortable breastfeeding session.

You may also want to choose a pump for going out. You can have a manual pump, the Medela one is amazing. Or if you want to be more discreet Elvie Stride can do the job.  I used all 3.

#8 – Formula and Bottles

You may want to breastfeed exclusively, however, having formula around can be very helpful. Remember, you have a newborn, and with the word “NEW” comes a lot of NEW things. Sometimes the plan may not go as we want it to. So, yes, having formula and bottles is something you don’t want to miss.

When choosing a formula, you have a lot of options, but to me, this is the best one. For the bottles, you need ones that are appropriate for your baby’s age and that have a slow-flow nipple. Nipples have numbers so follow the numbers and instructions. These bottles were good and had only a few parts to clean (some bottles have a lot of parts for each one, so yes, that’s something you may want to consider).

#9 – Baby Monitor

A baby monitor can help you keep an eye on your newborn while they sleep in another room. Make sure you choose a monitor with clear audio and a reliable connection. You may also want to choose a monitor with additional features like temperature monitoring, or two-way communication.

When choosing a baby monitor, look for one that’s easy to set up and use. I have Cubo Ai for my baby, and I love that I can hear perfectly and that wakes me up if she needs me.

#10 – Changing Table

A changing table can make diaper changes more comfortable and convenient. Look for a table that’s the right height for you and has plenty of storage for diapers, wipes, and other supplies.

When choosing a changing table, you may want one that can be converted into a dresser or other piece of furniture as your baby grows, that’s why I love my Babyletto changing table And it comes in various colors!!!

#11– Stroller

A stroller can help you get out and about with your newborn. Look for one that’s lightweight, easy to fold, and has a comfortable seat for your baby. You may also want to choose one with additional features like a sunshade, storage basket, or adjustable handlebar.

When choosing a stroller, you’d want one that is compatible with your car seat. Believe me, it really makes a difference. After going to the store like 10 times, I picked Uppababy Minu, this one finally captivates me because is light and easy to fold and grows with your baby.

#12– First Aid Kit

It’s always a good idea to have a basic first-aid kit on hand. Your kit should include items like a thermometer, baby clippers, and a nose Frida. Also, saline water, baby oil, cotton balls, swabs, band-aids, and Neosporin (this cream is like the holy grail!!!) Have it always on hand and Arnica too, it’s natural and helps a lot with bumps.

Remember, every baby is different, and you may find that you need additional items based on your baby’s unique needs. Don’t hesitate to leave any questions in the comments or reach out to friends, family, or healthcare professionals if you have any questions or concerns.
